Nurse Residency Program

West Hawaii Region’s (WHR) Nurse Residency Program supports new graduate nurses as they begin their careers and grow into confident, skilled healthcare professionals.

This year long program provides hands-on training, online learning, clinical experience and project-based work designed to help new nurses build the knowledge, confidence and support network they need to succeed. Developed in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi State Center of Nursing, the program reflects WHR’s commitment to education, workforce development and quality care close to home.

Program Overview

The Nurse Residency Program is designed for new graduate nurses who are ready to begin their careers in a supportive hospital environment.

Participants are employed by Kona Community Hospital and/or Kohala Hospital while completing the program. Over the course of the year, residents receive training and mentorship that help prepare them for long-term success in nursing.

Program details:

  • Duration: 1 year
  • Program start: Training typically begins in August
  • Application period: Applications and interviews typically take place in May
  • Cost: There is no enrollment fee for nurse residents

Why Choose Our Program

The Nurse Residency Program gives new nurses the opportunity to learn, grow and begin their careers close to home.

Participants receive hands-on skills training, supplemental online learning, and support from experienced clinicians and preceptors. The program also includes an evidence-based practice project that helps residents apply what they are learning to real patient care settings.

Through this experience, nurse residents build confidence, strengthen clinical skills, and become part of a community committed to excellence and compassionate care.

Program Departments

Nurse residents may gain experience in several departments, including:

  • Emergency Department
  • Medical Surgical Unit
  • Behavioral Health
  • Acute Care Float Pool

Application Process

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited registered nursing program. Successful completion and passing of the NCLEX exam is required within three months of the start of the program.

Candidates must be ready to commit to the full yearlong training program. Openings are typically posted each spring, and interested applicants are encouraged to visit the Careers page for the most up-to-date list of opportunities.
