Surgical Technology Program

KCH Surgical Technology Program

The Kona Community Hospital (KCH) Surgical Technology Program prepares students for meaningful careers as surgical technologists and important members of the operating room team.

Through classroom instruction, hands-on training and clinical learning, students build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to support safe, high-quality surgical care. The program is designed for students who are ready to be challenged, grow their abilities and pursue a career that makes a direct difference for patients and surgical teams.

About the Program

The Surgical Technology Program prepares students to become entry-level surgical technologists. With a small class size and close faculty support, students receive focused instruction and practical experience in the essential responsibilities of the profession.

Graduates are prepared to support surgical teams by maintaining sterile technique, preparing instruments and equipment, anticipating the needs of the surgical team and helping create a safe environment for patients.

KCH currently accepts three students into the program each year, with new classes beginning in August.

Accreditation

The KCH Surgical Technology Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs since May 2023.

Accreditation means the program meets specific standards for surgical technology education and helps ensure graduates are prepared to enter the workforce as competent, qualified professionals.

Program Goals

The goal of the Surgical Technology Program is to prepare students with the knowledge, skills and professional behaviors needed to become competent entry-level surgical technologists.

Program graduates are expected to:

  • Use problem solving, critical thinking and communication effectively.
  • Apply principles of surgical asepsis as part of the perioperative process.
  • Prepare sterile areas, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Support patient safety as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the surgical technologist.
  • Provide care that recognizes the needs and dignity of each patient.
  • Meet or exceed current accreditation standards and guidelines for surgical technology education.

About the Profession

Surgical technologists are essential members of the operating room team. They help prepare the operating room, organize and maintain sterile instruments and equipment, and assist the surgical team throughout a procedure.

Working under the supervision of qualified nurses, physicians and surgical leaders, surgical technologists help ensure procedures are carried out safely, smoothly and efficiently.
